"How can your chairs be so comfortable?”
“How can solid concrete feel this good?”
“How is this possible, I thought it would need a cushion?”
The answer is simple: good ergonomics. The seat shape works well with your body, regardless of your shape. The planes hold and support your thighs and rear-end. And, for our chairs with backs, they focus and support the muscles along your spine.
For maximum comfort, sit as far back in our seats as possible. This position will spread your weight evenly across the entire seating surface creating the greatest comfort.
Seat Covers:
We do offer seat covers, but they are not for cushioning (though they do offer a bit of padding). Rather, they are for insulation and warmth. Concrete is cool to the touch—cold, even. Our felted wool seat covers offer just the right amount of barrier and warmth. -
All of our pieces showcase the artisan’s hand—at work and at play. We work the materials, try to get the most out of them. The details—the look, feel, and finish—of each piece are intentional. Taken as a whole they create a story. Convey an emotion. Express ideas. Perspective. Individuality. Make each, art.
About Our Concrete:
Each casting is unique; each has a life of its own. No two pieces will ever have the exact same look, feel, or finish. Even two pieces in every way similar—cast, cured, and finished together—will have variations; small differences in color, pattern, and presence. For us, this is part of what makes concrete so special.About Our Wood:
We cherish the forest resources that provide our woods. As such, we strive to make full use of every board. In addition to beautiful color and figure, we often incorporate many of the other details—knots, unusual figure or grain, small voids—into our pieces. Each piece of wood is unique; each chair frame will be unique.Good To Know/Living with Our Concrete & Wood:
Our concrete and wood will change over time. Newer materials will be brighter and have more color variation. Older materials will become darker and more uniform. Concrete may even develop tiny surface cracks. Wood and concrete will patina over time, regardless of your maintenance regimen. Our concrete and wood can absorb, stain, or discolor whenever anything wet—and sometimes dry—comes into contact with it. Address any stains or spills immediately.
Our concrete and wood require maintenance, to the degree you want them to look. Depending on your preferences, maintenance may be required once a week, once a month, once a year, or never. Maintain to the look you wish to maintain.
Interestingly, some clients choose not to maintain at all. Instead, they embrace the weathered or stained look our furniture will gain over time. And why not? Each piece begins to tell a story. Recount histories. Remember that great bottle of wine? Making pesto? Potting plants last Spring? The furniture becomes a kind of time capsule.
Last, But Certainly Not Least:
If you drop our furniture it breaks. If you drop something on it, it breaks. The edges of our furniture are especially vulnerable. Use great care when handling any of our pieces. -
We recommend the Wren Chair for interior use only. Our wood finish is not rated for exterior use.
About Our Concrete Finish:
We use a commercial grade penetrating water-based acrylic sealer followed by a topcoat of wax on all of our concrete. These products create a beautiful finish that is durable, but it is not impervious. Liquids will still absorb into the surface, based on a function of time. The longer the contact, the further into the concrete they will absorb. Or, put another way, the shorter the duration, the more likely they are to clean. Fats, acids, and deeply colored liquids will show most. Address all spills immediately. When there is a spill:
Tamp immediately with a damp towel then allow to air dry. A dark spot will remain, but should dry to a normal color within a few minutes. If it does not, give it some time. Some stains require a few weeks to dry and fade.If a stain will not come out:
Contact us for advice and more information. Typically, the piece will need to be refinished. This usually requires a technician and may require moving the piece to a suitable shop. For routine aesthetic maintenance (To maintain shine/luster):
Polish the concrete, which is as simple as wipe or spray-on and wipe off. Depending on your environment and usage we typically recommend one of two products. Reach out for our latest recommendations.Good advice:
Polish concrete before a dinner party or before any other potentially messy event. This preemptive polishing step will create a temporary barrier that will decrease absorption and make cleaning easier. To fix light scratches (those you can see, but not feel):
The concrete will need a fresh coat of wax. Contact us for our latest wax and waxing recommendations. To fix deep scratches (those into the concrete), or if the concrete is chipped:
Contact us for advice. Depending on the circumstances, fixes can be as simple as DIY or more complex and require a technician.About Our Wood Finish:
We use a commercial-grade penetrating oil and wax finish. We love the way it looks, especially next to our concrete, and it offers great protection. But, while water-resistant, it is not waterproof. Liquids will absorb into the surface, based on a function of time. The shorter the duration, the easier to clean. When there is a spill:
Tamp immediately with a dry towel, then allow to air dry. If residue remains, wipe with a damp towel and immediately dry.For routine aesthetic maintenance (To maintain shine/luster):
Wax the wood; which is as simple as wipe on, wait, and wipe off. Depending on your environment and usage we typically recommend one of three products. Reach out for our latest recommendations. To fix light scratches (those you can see, but not feel):
Wax the wood, same instructions as above. To fix deep scratches (those into the wood), or if a piece of wood is broken off:
Contact us for advice. Depending on the circumstances, fixes can be as simple as DIY or more complex and require a technician. If you dent the wood:
Contacts us for advice. If the dent is tiny, it may be able to be filled. Unfortunately, filling is often distracting and looks artificial. We may advise doing nothing (besides waxing if the finish is compromised) and instead embracing the change. Over time, these (inevitable) dents become “character marks” showing usage and time and place. Sometimes they even make a piece more beautiful. For our seat covers:
Felted wool naturally absorbs liquid. Tamp spills immediately with a damp towel and let air dry. If necessary, dry clean. Do not machine wash. -
All of our furniture is hand-crafted. Treat accordingly. Use with extreme care and avoid misuse.
Regarding our chairs:
Our chairs are meant for sitting—and only sitting—with all legs touching the floor at all times. Leaning back will damage or break them. Leaning side-to-side will damage or break them. Avoid any excessive or jarring movements—especially side-to-side movements—as these can damage or break them.Use our chairs on smooth, flat floors. Never use them on uneven surfaces. Uneven surfaces will cause high stresses on chair structure, which will damage or break the chair.
Always use our chairs in an upright position. Never place them on their sides, even when storing.
Regarding Our Craftsmanship:
We stand behind the quality and craftsmanship of our products. If you are having an issue, let us know. We will do our best to support and remedy the situation. Reach out with any questions, especially those regarding usage and/or maintenance. Please be proactive so we can help you avoid problems before they begin.Important Information Regarding our Products’ Finish:
